OPP continue to warn Ontario residents about online romance scams after a Listowel man was defrauded.

A Listowel resident called Perth County OPP Saturday morning to report being defrauded.

In early September, a man was allegedly entrapped and robbed of cash and his car in what police called a fake date scheme in Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The 26-year-old man, from Winterton, met the woman on an online dating site and Facebook. That same week, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit — which comprises members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and RCMP — issued a warning people to exercise caution when meeting people that they're been chatting with online.

She said she also needed extra funds because it would cost her to be allowed to travel outside of Africa. Not long after transferring the money, he realized that he was being strung along and the woman had no intention of travelling anywhere. In a media release, the OPP said “Scammers can easily steal photos online and use dating sites and social media to lure victims into sending money for various reasons.
